Basically what's going on in congress is a proposed new law that will allow others to legally use works of art that you've created, for free.

Yes legalized art theft.

The Orphan Works Bill.

Companies, big and small, (and even perhaps some individuals) can find your artwork online, see if it's been registered as being copy written, and if not they can register it as being "orphaned" and use it for their own benefit. And once they register it, not only will you not be paid for them using your work, but it would then become illegal for you to use your OWN work.

This applies to everything you put out there, including images you've taken of yourself or family.

How fucked up is that?

Currently all you have to do is put the circled C on your work, and your name, and it's copy written. Registration gives you the ability to sue others who steal your work, but even unregistered, you still have all the legal rights to it. And now others want to take that away, and force you to register, or goodbye rights.

So do what you have to do, write to legislators, congressmen, senators, etc. Sign the petition (link will be at the bottom of this) DO SOMETHING. Don't just be lazy and let this bill be passed.

Now most officials have others read their mail, but if enough people send letters about an issue, they usually are notified about it.
